Paver Patios and Hardscape in Edmond, OK

Central Oklahoma clay moves. What goes under the pavers matters more here than the national price guides suggest.

The short version

The pavers are the part you see. The base is the part that decides whether it is still flat in five years.

Paver patios in this metro price higher than national averages predict, and the reason is underneath. Expansive clay soils need a deeper, better-compacted base section than the national assumption, and the cost of doing that properly does not appear in any published cost database. Local pricing reflects it.

As a planning range, expect roughly $21 to $28 per square foot installed for a standard concrete paver on a properly prepared base, with the low end near $15 for simple work on open ground and $40 at the top for premium material and difficult access.

The paver itself is the biggest single lever. Moving from a standard concrete paver to clay brick, porcelain, travertine or natural stone swings the total by roughly half again end to end, before any pattern or border work.

Worth knowing

Four things that move this number

  • Base depth is the honest difference between a cheap quote and a good one, and it is invisible the day it is finished.
  • Edge restraint and polymeric sand are what stop the perimeter creeping outward.
  • Drainage away from the house is a design decision. Getting it wrong is expensive to fix.
  • Pavers can be lifted and reset. That is a genuine advantage over concrete when a tree root or a settlement problem shows up later.

Whatever you build, if it burns gas or draws power the utilities are separately permitted work in Edmond. The city requires a permit for any gas piping, new or altered, and for electrical beyond replacing a switch or receptacle.

Planning ranges for the Oklahoma City metro market, not quotes. They cover the work installed and exclude the permit, which is set by whichever building department has jurisdiction. A quote follows a site visit.

Published ranges get you close. A site visit gets you a price, because where the meter and the panel sit changes the job more than the finish does.

Questions

Paver Patios and Hardscape

Pavers or poured concrete?

Pavers cost more up front and can be lifted and reset if something moves. Concrete is cheaper per square foot and cracks where it decides to unless you control the joints. On expansive clay that difference matters more than it does elsewhere.

Do paver patios need a permit in Edmond?

A ground-level patio is usually flatwork rather than a structure, but driveway and sidewalk work in the public right of way does require a permit, and so does a retaining wall over four feet. Check with Building and Safety before you assume.

How long does a paver patio last?

The pavers themselves outlast most of us. What fails is the base and the edge, which is why base preparation is the thing worth paying for.

What moves the price most?

Material choice first, then access, then base depth. A back garden a wheelbarrow can reach and one that needs everything carried through a side gate are different jobs.
